Having a local hospital is vital to the community’s wellbeing. As Ely grows, more people are relying on the hospital for care close to home. The Trust has one clear mission: to help the hospital be the best it can be by raising money for important projects that improve care for patients.

By funding essential new equipment and improvements to hospital facilities, the Trust will help the hospital offer more services, shorter waiting times and quicker diagnoses for local people.

The Trust is currently focusing on three key areas.

  • The creation of a new Audiology Suite, offering hearing assessments and treatment. This is  key to unlocking other areas of the hospital for development.

  • An upgrade of the current Minor Injuries Unit into a full Urgent Treatment Centre offering  immediate emergency care

  • Equipment for diagnosing prostate, gynae and teenage cancers

These are part of a wider plan to improve the hospital. A brand-new Diagnostic Centre has already opened, supported by Cambridge University Hospital, offering scans and tests including MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-rays. However, lacking further funding from the NHS further improvements are on hold. This is where the vital support of the community for the Princess of Wales Hospital is key to meet the needs of Ely’s growing population. Support from the community is vital to help make this next phase happen.

The charity has already received strong support. Over Easter, Ben’s Yard hosted an Easter Egg Hunt, and used the opportunity to raise money and awareness for the newly launched charity. The Trust plans to hold more events and activities throughout the year to involve the community and raise further funds.

Allyson Broadhurst, Chair of the Trust, said:

“The Princess of Wales Hospital is an important part of life in Ely. We want to make sure our much loved hospital gets the support it needs so people can get great care without travelling far. This charity is a way for all of us to support our local hospital and make a difference together.”

Alastair Morbey, owner of Ben’s Yard, said:

“We were really pleased to host the Easter event and support the charity from the start. The hospital is here for all of us, and at Ben’s Yard we want to help however we can. We are looking forward to doing more events to raise money and support this important cause.”

The Trust was by started by three former Mayors of Ely who care deeply about the hospital and want to help it invest in vital equipment, enhancing the facilities and services above that able to be provided by the NHS. They are now asking others to get involved whether through donations, taking part in events or simply spreading the word.
