Volunteers needed at Stretham Old Engine

ree

Stretham Old Engine, built in 1831, is the last surviving, complete, land drainage pumping station in the Fens. This Listed Building was one of over one hundred such pumping stations that helped shape the Fens by draining the land.

It is no longer possible to operate the Old Engine by steam, as the Boilers are inoperative, but the visitors can still watch the Scoop Wheel and the Beam engine rotating, now powered by an electric motor. A disused 100 years old Mirrlees Diesel Engine is also on display.

The Stretham Engine Trust is a registered Charity which main purpose is to manage and preserve the Stretham Old Engine. The site is usually open to visitors on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from Easter to October. Additional summer dates are listed on our website and group visits are welcomed at any time by prior arrangement.

The volunteers’ duties involve taking admission monies and showing visitors around the site. No technical knowledge is required but an interest in local history of the Fens or industrial engineering would be an advantage. On-site training would be given. Volunteers could also help with general maintenance, if they desire.

The Trust needs more volunteers to help run the site and, as a registered charity, it is solely dependent on volunteers to ensure its continuity.
